Brain Cave

A Large-Scale, Interactive Experience

My team was given the task of creating an interactive museum exhibit, designed with children in mind. Our concept is a small room that represents the human brain. We wanted to provide an experience that is engaging and educational. Each area of this walk-through "brain" contains activities that reflect the function of that area of a true brain.

Objective We wanted to create an activity-based learning experience within an information space. This exhibit is informative but also allows children to learn new skills while interacting with it.

Concept The Brain Cave is an exhibit that teaches children about the various functions of the brain. At the same time, it allows children to play games inside of the brain that improve skills associated with the functions.

Method We started with sketches of your concept and then we built a simple, small-scale version ot the brain with paper and plastic. Initially, we tested this concept by simulating a room-sized brain with bedsheets and sketches of the activity areas of the brain. We then conducted experience prototyping sessions within the brain in order to figure out how to simulate the entire experience for user testing.

Design The final design of the Brain Cave will be an ambient, interactive experience. The children will walk into the brain cavity and be surrounded by lights, sounds and activities. The neural network of the brain will pulse like lighting in the walls of the Brain Cave. Each area of brain function displays digital, interactive screens or objects that engage the children in skill building activities. We intend to feature the final design and implementation of the Cave as a digital art installation.

Test We tested our simulation prototype with low-fi mock-ups of the brain-function area activities. From this test, we were able to identify accessibility issues and generate more refined activity ideas for the next iteration of our design.
